Cave exploration is undertaken not only for sport and recreation, but also for purposes of geographic and scientific research. This activity has been practised for centuries on Monte Cucco and many generations of naturalists have been stimulated and inspired when exploring this immense and world-famous grotto. There is no field of research within the natural sciences which is not applicable to this vast underground world: geology, karstification, hydrology, mineralogy, paleontology, paleethnology, the study of fauna and flora, meteorology, chemistry, physics and human biology.
