A racing bike, adapted for touring, is a very economical way of travelling around, and takes one away from the usual tourist routes.
Touring cyclists generally share a strong environmental sense and a passion for bicycles as a means of transport and as aspect of their life-style. They have a lively curiosity with regard to places which are unknown to the general public and can adapt easily to unforeseen circumstances.
There are associations like the ECF (European Cyclists' Federation) which offer itineraries specially tailored for sporting enthusiasts wishing to undertake this type of holiday. A map called “EuroVelo” has been produced, showing specific cycle routes.
It is sometimes possible to use “off-road” routes: for example using a mountain bike to travel along bridle paths.
